Dr. Grymm on Selling NY: The Steampunk Apartment

As some of you remember, we had mentioned in summer of last year that we were asked to be on the HGTV show Selling NY, to assist them in helping explain the Steampunk subculture and design aesthetic. Why? Because they had a unique and difficult apartment they needed to sell for an eccentric client. This property has been well publicized in several papers and magazines as well as being one of the Wall Street Journals top viewed articles. This of course brought along alot of negative commentary from both the Steampunk community and self appointed critics of unique apartments. Now I can understand that without actually having the opportunity to experience this apartments first hand, the typical couch jockey might label it cluttered, a mess, juvenile, ridiculous and my favorite, "not Steampunk at all".

So after doing some research, Parul-Gita Brahmbhatt a Realtor from CORE found me via our book 1000 Steampunk Creations and brought me on to be the "Steampunk Expert", a title I have never been comfortable with. NO ONE is a Steampunk Expert. Like any art based movement, it is up to the viewer to interpret and make their own opinion on an esthetic that is loosely based on time periods, styles, and materials. Of course being that it is an alternate reality, there is no real right or wrong no matter what the stubborn Neo-Vics and uptight posers would like you to believe. Yes it comes from our rich history of literature storytelling, science and invention, but an actual part of history... No.

So is this unique apartment completely Steampunk? No. But is any thing out there that completely is? No. The movies and books we love have the elements in it and most usually are not completely Steampunk and there is still a thread of realism and actual history to them. This apartment is an nice mixture of Steampunk, Dieselpunk, and Post Apocalyptic, but more so it was designed by someone who loved and appreciated the look for himself. People forget that it's not that the Realtors who decorated this apartment by what they thought Steampunk was because it is a "hot new movement hitting the main stream". This apartment is as unique as the fellow who decided to live in it, not even he knew what Steampunk was, and when he up and moved on he left these Realtors with a challenge.
Coming from an apartment sales background during a chapter of my life, I understood this challenge all too well. They were in a bind. They wanted someone to buy this apartment for what it was, not to gut it and start over. This Apartment is not just filled with junk. most of the pieces are valuable antiques and parts of history that were discarded and refurbished now with a purpose. And no, it's not every ones cup of tea, but that's OK. There is someone who will love it. Their "needle in a haystack" buyer, and I for one was honored to lend my voice to help them find that person.

I made the call to a select few of the people in the Steampunk community to help the potential buyers and other agents realize that we the Steampunk Community are not a bunch of freaks running around in costumes. We are intelligent, talented, business minded artists who haven't forgotten how powerful imagination is. As most who know me, I am very selective about what I lend my voice and image to. I don't do this for fame and glory. I believe that what I say ultimately represents not only me and my business, but also the Steampunk Art community that I have come to love.
So all in all, here is edited episode showing just the Steampunk property. Special thanks to CORE, Parul-Gita Brahmbhatt, Michael Bridenstine and the crew for coming out to my Lab and allowing me to be a part of this.

So final word from Dr. Grymm: It's your choice how you decorate your home. Be it white walls, gothic, tree house, or dungeon. When we as Steampunks start judging what others precieve as "Steampunk done wrong", we are no better then the people who hate our community and our imagination, and we're not helping anyone. Please let Steampunk inspire others the way it inspired you! I don't care if it's Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, your neighbors kid, or your mail man! We all have the right to our own opinions.  Don't let anyone ever tell you differently.

Furthermore, it you ARE the right person for this apartment, contact CORE today!!

Thanks for watching and reading.

First off, GREAT job in NYC! It certainly gives more credibility to the SteamPunk movement.

But even more importantly, I applaud your attitude toward SteamPunk. I fully agree that it is a continually evolving movement, and should be open to creative ideas. (Tho the Beiber video DID cause intestinal pain for me).

And here's MY take on why it can evolve, and include a wider variety of creativity than solely Jules-Verne futurism:

It's because of WHO Jules Verne WAS: a visionary who wrote in the Victorian era, and predicted, through fantasy, the industrial age of the 1920s. And BEYOND! His "lost work", PARIS IN THE 20TH CENTURY, is about a young man who lives in a world of glass skyscrapers, high-speed trains, gas-powered automobiles, calculators, and a worldwide communications network. I think Steampunk represents the ideals of that process. FORWARD-THINKING. The fantasies of today are going to be the realities of tomorrow. This is already happening on an exponential scale. If Steampunk cannot evolve in its creative spirit, it contradicts the visionary genius that inspired it.

What a very cool looking apartment, I love your steam punk theme. Thank you for sharing.

It's a very posh apartment. It's very intriguing and it has a lot of unique bathroom fixtures too. I'd love to buy this if only I could afford it.

Great job on the video! I love how much you love steampunk, and everything it is to others who like it. I like the look of this unique apartment, but I don't think I can replicate the look for my house for rent in Makati.

I will tell some conveyancers in Brisbane who are my friends about this. The color and the furniture inside this apartment is wonderful!

I hope to find this kind of apartment in Manila, Philippines. I found several spaces from Manila real estates. I hope to get an apartment in Manila that looks like this with a very reasonable price.

That was cool place to live in. I was looking for a place that will suit my personality.

Those pictures look great especially the third one. My business partner just for the perfect rent out in makati and I would really love to copy this theme right now.

If only I can renovate my apartment for rent in makati. *sigh* Well, anyways, nice interiors! Keep rockin'!

This looks so avant-garde with a rustic touch. It's an eclectic mix. I'm looking for shutters perth but I don't think that would be enough to achieve anything remotely close to this.

Arthur Smith said...

Now this would be a welcome addition to the property sales east london; that would definitely get buyers.

Jonathan Park said...

I've heard about this from perth relocation agents and I knew I had to see it for myself. I couldn't believe my eyes. This is like the culmination of everything I wanted in an apartment.

Farham Erikson said...

I've heard from John Hayson that houses with novelty items such as this one has a great selling value. I wouldn't have any second thought about this one. This might cost a fortune.

I sure hope the mortgage rates in massachusetts stay stable and manageable long enough for me to find an an apartment that looks like that. If anything, it would make for a real nice, funky place to live.

Erlyn Ritchie said...

I think that real estate photographers Perth will be interested to take some pictures of this apartment. I can’t believe that it is only an apartment because the owner did invest a lot in designing that place instead of a condominium.

Damian Bathory said...

Not a bad idea for overall home decor. I'd be sure to add in some inconspicuous roof ventilation vents though. I'd hate for a well-designed place to be so unbearably stuffy.

Grace Johnson said...

You could actually consult to a mortgage broker penrith about the details and perks of this unique and cool house. But I doubt the owner will seriously sell it cause it's like one in a million find.

Wade Wilson said...

Well, at least that would make for pretty unique home decor. Incidentally, I saw some bifold doors perth at the home improvement center that would go very well with that.

Robert Thorne said...

Why would they have trouble selling an apartment like that? Does it need some work, such as from a carpenter or plumbing services melbourne? Honestly, if I had the time and money, I'd get it myself.

nehvabby said...

Cool! It is very colorful, I like this style and can I get some ideas here for my friend's condo here in Taguig. He wants a renovation for his condo. Thanks.

Sophie Tyler Neil said...

The apartment does not have a motif. The parts of it are confusing but unique. If I had a chance I would buy exactly the same thing, the only problem is that my teen bedding sets are not a match with the overall design, but I think that will push through.

Danny P. said...

Yes, the overall interior is an eye-candy, however, I can't imagine how the domesticated part of the apartment looks like. It's still important that design shouldn't hamper functionality. What if the sink is clogged or the plumbing is too complex to be dealt by commercial plumbing companies melbourne? That's gonna be tough to handle.

Tina Hover said...

Like you've pointed out, it's not everyone's cup of tea so I can just imagine how hard it is selling this apartment. I'm wondering what the conveyancers are doing to build up this property.

Denise Canzeller said...

I fancy their roller shutters themes. I think those are specially made in terms of DIY. I'll start with the first bunch and try to emulate them from the design.

Michelle Helena Cabrera said...

I have an apartment in Taguig that I want to design like this! It looks easier to put up security systems that don't look too obvious when you see them.
I like your statement, "Like any art based movement, it is up to the viewer to interpret and make their own opinion..." one's judgment upon ART really depends on the viewer's interpretation and preference, just like "beauty is in the eyes of the beholder"

Hugh Parizeau said...

It seems to me like the set design was made by a painter fremantle. Anyway, I really love the way the set looks like, very futuristic design.

Patrick Holland said...

Well, not everyone will like it but I think it's pretty cool. I believe it will be an ideal interior design to my Texas ranch that I recently purchased.

I would definitely want an apartment fully furnished like this one. But in anyone's case, you should have it modified by an interior decorator. But this definitely looks like my brother would want to live in it because it has a sports bar feel.

Caitlin Stephens said...

This interior will definitely give me a place of zen. Imagine going home from a hard days work to this majestic interior. And it really speaks my personality. I will totality have this interior for my apartment.

Skye Floyd said...

I really did hope that you were able to take a photo of the bathroom. I am really curious on how it looks like. It should come along with the design of the whole apartment.

Sean Rogers said...

That doesn't look like a laboratory to me. The place looks like a futuristic type of living room.

It'll be more interesting if he also have a steampunk-inspired pool. I wonder how will the pool look like.

A quick internet search reveals that the property finally sold, in April 2013, after most of the steampunk decor was removed.
